Fact Of The Day – What They Feed On…
The Peregrines feed almost solely on medium-sized birds such as pigeons, waterfowl and waders. Globally, it is estimated that between 1,500 and 2,000 bird species (around 1/5th of all species worldwide) are predated somewhere by peregrines. In urban areas, the main component of the Peregrine’s diet is the Feral Pigeon, which cover 80% or more of the diet. Other common city birds are also taken: Wood Pigeons, Swifts, and Starlings. Bats are rarely taken, but when they are, it is at dusk.
Two!
Last night another egg was laid. We think about 10.30 ish.
The first picture was taken last night and we were sure this was another egg. This was confirmed this morning.
Fact Of The Day – Sizes Of Peregrines…
Everyday (or as often as we can), for the rest of the season, we will be putting a different fact up about peregrines. Today is the first one and I thought about the size of peregrines. Peregrine Falcons have reverse sexual dimorphism in size; this means that the Female is larger than the male, by up to 30%! In addition, the Males weigh just 580 – 750 grams, while females weigh 925 grames – 1.3 Kg.
The photo below, taken from our webcam, demonstrates this…
